The Process

How do you turn one day on the calendar into an educational experience that reaches thousands of classrooms?

1 / The Challenge

Constitution Day Live is more than a single production, it's a large-scale initiative that requires months of planning across multiple departments. Each year introduces a new theme, new educational goals, and an entirely new collection of multimedia deliverables that must launch together while supporting both classroom instruction and organizational priorities.

Success depends on aligning creative, curriculum, marketing, and leadership teams around a shared vision while managing a production schedule with overlapping timelines and multiple stakeholders.

2 / My Role

As Creative Director, I lead the annual creative development and production strategy for Constitution Day Live from concept through launch. Each year, I set the creative through-line, this year's theme and how it plays out differently across a short-form story, a documentary interview, and a curriculum-aligned explainer, so the initiative feels cohesive despite spanning multiple formats and teams.

My role includes shaping the overall creative vision, collaborating with internal teams to develop programming, overseeing production, and ensuring every deliverable supports both the educational goals and the audience experience.

3 / The Process

Each year starts with choosing a theme that gives the initiative a fresh angle without losing what makes it recognizable as Constitution Day Live. From there, I map that theme across a deliberate mix of formats: short, action-oriented pieces that meet students where their attention already is, and longer documentary-style and interview content for classrooms ready to go deeper. I write and shape the creative direction for each piece so the tone stays consistent across formats, even as runtime and style shift from a two-minute civic-leadership story to a six-minute scholar interview.

Production runs across multiple simultaneous shoots and edits to hit a single September launch window, so I set the schedule backward from that date and keep every deliverable, curriculum resources included, moving toward the same release. Marketing, curriculum, and leadership all plan around that same date, so the creative direction has to be locked early enough for every team to build on it.

4 / The Outcome

Constitution Day Live has become one of the organization's signature annual initiatives, bringing together original educational programming, multimedia storytelling, and cross-department collaboration into a cohesive experience for classrooms nationwide. The 2025 series generated over 3,500 hours of watch time in its first month alone.

The data also validated the format strategy: the short, action-oriented "How To Be a Civic Leader" story led the series with a 79.1% average view percentage, while the longer documentary-style piece held viewers more than twice as long per session, over three and a half minutes on average, showing that both formats serve real, distinct audience needs rather than competing for the same attention. The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and creative leadership can transform complex historical topics into engaging learning experiences at scale.

5 / Why it Mattered

Constitution Day Live reinforced that the strongest creative work begins long before production. Bringing curriculum, marketing, production, and leadership together early creates better ideas, smoother execution, and ultimately a stronger experience for teachers and students.
